Event Description:
It’s no secret that small businesses have been hit hard by Covid-19, this is especially true in our rural Utah communities. What is equally true is that our rural communities are strong, resilient and determined to fight to make the places we call home somewhere special to live. Our way of doing business may look markedly different for some time, but with proper planning we can get our businesses on the road to recovery.
At this workshop we will have four presenters that will talk about ideas, resources, and actionable items you can do now to help with your small business recovery. We will be discussing the following subject areas: Business Plan, Finance, Marketing and Business Management.

Meet Our Presenters:
Kara Laws, Small Town Hub
Kara Laws is the co-owner and CEO of Small Town Hub, a business that helps small, rural cities and their local businesses strengthen and support their local economies. Kara spent years as a political journalist learning the ins and out of rural government, tourism, and its role in economic development.
Kara Laws has over 16 years of business experience. She has started and sold businesses as well as taught other business owners from all over the country. Kara is a business educator with a specialty in marketing, systems, and rural businesses. Multi-million dollar companies have contracted with Kara to train their team and/or clients.
DebraLee Terry, Financial Liberty
DebraLee Terry entered the business world at age 17 when she started her own dance studio, a successful business she owned & directed for 36 years. At age 18 she became the youngest Licensed Realtor in the State of Utah & sold Real Estate for 8 years. A mother of 9 and grandmother of 25 she understands the delicate balance of running a business while raising a family. With a lifetime obsession in the area of financial freedom, she paid off over $442,000 of debt & founded the Company Financial Liberty. She is the President of our local Toastmasters, has coached and presented in the United States, Latin America Europe & Asia. She is a Money Mentor and a Transformation Coach. She helps families break free from debt, stress & the financial treadmill, expand their income, and secure their futures so they can help others in a much bigger way.
Mike Sarles, Utah State University Extension
Mike Sarles is a Program Coordinator for the Rural Online Initiative with Utah State University Extension based in Garfield County. In his current capacity he teaches rural Utahns how to be effective remote workers and business leaders how to be excellent managers of remote teams. Mike has worked in the private sector with 20 plus years of experience in international business, sales, and online marketing. He has most recently managed a remote sales team while also working remotely as a remote manager. Mike received his Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. He speaks Mandarin Chinese and enjoys traveling to Asia. Mike is married with 5 children (three born in Asia). He is passionate about high tech and the e-commerce. When he’s not staring at a screen, he enjoys mountain biking, scuba diving, swimming, hanging out with his kids, cooking, and baking. Mike is also a volunteer firefighter, active in his community and has two small business ventures.
Debbie Drake, Women's Business Center of Utah
Debbie Drake is affectionately known as a ‘squirrel girl’ by her close and crazy friends! She has a lot of interests and always wants to learn new things. Debbie has had careers in banking, construction and higher education and has been a home designer, artist and is passionate about helping women being successful in building their businesses and following their dreams. She is currently the Director for Women’s Business Center of Utah in Cedar City and is charged with serving the women business owners in the 15 southern and eastern counties of Utah. The Women’s Business Center of Utah provides free one on one counseling and free or low cost trainings, while helping to encourage, build confidence and create opportunities for women to be successful in their entrepreneurial journey.
